Intelligent metrics for a better built environment
You may be noticing some installation activity around the office and wondering what’s going on.
Your organization is in the process of installing Pangeam sensors throughout the office, which is a platform designed to help improve the workplace experience for occupants. At Pangeam, we have designed a hardware and software platform for studying how occupants use space and the furniture and technology within it in order to inform long term improvements. Your organization cares about the quality of your work environment and wishes to collect data to help make decisions about long- term improvements and other changes.
There is nothing you need to do. The Pangeam platform is passive. Data is anonymous, and you are not being tracked. However, we understand you may have additional questions about how Pangeam works. We have prepared this FAQ document to address common questions about Pangeam.
Pangeam General FAQs
1. What is Pangeam?
Pangeam is a business intelligence platform for improving the workplace experience for occupants. The platform hardware consists of sensors placed in spaces throughout the office. The hardware collects anonymous data about user ergonomic movements (postures and poses), which is aggregated in a software platform. Pangeam’s software reports a metric known as “Team-Environment Fit” (TEF), to show how well a space is supporting user movements and activities.
2. What kind of data does Pangeam collect?
Pangeam detects the presence of people and objects on a floor plan. People are anonymously sensed in a “data point cloud,” and clusters of people and ergonomic movements are illustrated on a floor plan diagram.
3. How do organizations use Pangeam data?
Organizations use Pangeam’s “Team-Environment Fit” (TEF) scores to assess the performance of layout and furniture in order to determine if changes are needed. In some cases, the data may inform the future redesign of space. In other cases, the data may inform smaller scale improvements, amenity upgrades, or furniture changes. Pangeam data may also be used to inform the reallocation of space and furniture based on need.
4. How does Pangeam help me?
Pangeam’s “Team-Environment Fit” (TEF) metric helps your organization identify potential challenges with the layout of your office. Perhaps you have trouble focusing in an active area, or you can’t find the correct size of meeting room because the ones you need are always full. Perhaps the amenities in pantries and cafes aren’t creating a great experience. These are example scenarios that your organization may address through the use of Pangeam’s metrics. Pangeam will help your organization optimize the layout and design of space while providing you with an optimal experience when you are in the office.
5. Am I being tracked in the office?
No. Pangeam collects no personally identifying information (PII). The Pangeam platform can detect the presence of people in space in order to determine the usage of space and the performance of layout and furnishings in support of everyday activities. However, the Pangeam platform cannot identify individuals or their devices, since individuals are merely represented as a data point cloud.
6. Am I being photographed or recorded?
No. Pangeam’s sensor captures data of the surroundings in range, which is immediately destroyed once it is converted to a data point cloud. No images are ever transmitted outside of the floor they are captured on. Furthermore, Pangeam doesn’t use any facial recognition technology nor do we capture any personally identifying information (PII), or device bluetooth, wifi data or audio data.
7. Does Pangeam track me as an individual, or will my boss know whether or not I’m at my desk?
No. Pangeam does not collect any personally identifying information (PII). Pangeam can sense the presence of people in space, but the technology only recognizes a human form in the shape of a generic figure. The technology does not identify individuals. Pangeam can sense if spaces are utilized or not, but it does not know (nor does it report) who occupies space.
8. Is Pangeam secure?
Yes. Pangeam underwent a rigorous security review with your organization’s IT and/or data security teams to ensure full compliance with your organization’s data security and privacy policies. Pangeam does not sense or “see” written materials, passwords, keyboard strokes, etc. There is no audio sensing within the Pangeam platform.
9. Where are the sensors located?
Every organization works with Pangeam to determine the appropriate areas of study in the office. Pangeam sensors are typically placed throughout open office areas, within meeting spaces, and in pantries and social areas. Some organizations place sensors in private offices. Pangeam does not install sensors in sensitive work areas or in places where people have an expectation of privacy, such as restrooms, wellness spaces, prayer rooms, or health-related spaces.
10. Are sensors installed in restrooms or wellness spaces?
No. Pangeam does not install sensors in sensitive work areas or in places where people have an expectation of privacy, such as restrooms, wellness spaces, prayer rooms, or health-related spaces.
11. Are the sensors safe?
Yes. The sensors do not emit any radio frequencies (including wi- fi and Bluetooth). Pangeam actively disables and has controls in place to ensure any radio frequency hardware is disabled and remains disabled.
12. Can I opt out?
Not necessarily. Pangeam sensors are installed throughout the office. If you come to the office, the Pangeam sensor will detect your presence. However, it does not identify you as an individual. Since you’re not identified as an individual, there is no way for you to “opt out”.
13. Will I be able to see the data that Pangeam collects?
Pangeam data is made available to a select number of users from your organization, most of whom are part of the real estate, facilities, and workplace experience teams. Each organization has a point of contact for managing data access. Please reach out to them if you have questions about the data for your organization.
14. Is there anything I need to do?
No. Pangeam’s platform is passive. Just as other technologies around the office help manage optimal lighting, sound, and temperature over time, Pangeam similarly helps manage optimal layout and environmental fit.
